Who We Are
University Medical Center “UMC” is a multi-specialty health care provider serving the West Alabama Community. UMC was created to provide training opportunities for medical students and residents who are studying at the University of Alabama School of Medicine, Tuscaloosa Campus and the College of Community Health Sciences. University Medical Center is committed to providing patient-friendly, patient-focused and patient-first health care to you and your family while training the next generation of physicians.
We accept BCBS, other private insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid. Anyone that is looking for a particular area of medical care to a family of over nine specialty services can find confidence and compassionate care in the Medical teams at the University Medical Center.
Resident physicians are doctors who have completed four years of medical school and have chosen to receive additional training in a specialty. After completing one year of residency, residents have fulfilled all the requirements by the State of Alabama to be fully licensed practicing physicians and are granted all rights and privileges. However, residents choose to complete the additional two years in order to be Board Certified in Family Medicine. If you are seen by a resident, your case will be reviewed by an attending faculty member. Residents are often found at most emergency rooms providing the main care on weekends and after hours.
We train 3rd and 4th year medical students for their clinical training. All of our students work closely with a doctor; they never see a patient by themselves. The medical students are gaining additional experience by being with patients that help develop their skills outside the classroom. We strongly believe in training medical students to be compassionate caregivers while learning to provide exceptional quality.
A nurse practitioner is a registered nurse who has completed advanced education (a minimum of a master’s degree) and training in
the diagnosis and management of common medical conditions, including chronic illnesses. Our nurse practitioners work very closely with our physicians and will always refer a patient who needs additional care.
As a teaching facility, our faculty must stay on top of the most current breakthroughs and studies. Our entire staff of clinical faculty is board certified, board eligible. This knowledge and experience is crucial in providing our next generation of doctors with one of the best educational opportunities available.
If you feel uncomfortable being seen by a resident or having a medical student in your exam room, please request an appointment during your physician’s private clinic.
