Fundraising Effort To Launch UMC Reading Program

November 12, 2020

Thanks to generous donors, efforts by the College of Community Health Sciences to establish University Medical Center’s Reach Out and Read-Alabama program are underway.

Nearly $10,000 was donated to CCHS for the reading program during a fundraising effort conducted as part of BAMA Blitz, The University of Alabama’s online giving campaign. All funds donated will be used to buy new books to help build UMC’s book collection and launch its Reach Out and Read-Alabama program.

Through the program, every pediatric patient at UMC age 6 months to 5 years will receive a new book during their well-child visits. The goal of the program is to increase the availability of new books to children and their families who are cared for by UMC health-care providers.

“By becoming a Reach Out and Read-Alabama site at University Medical Center, we have the opportunity to better engage and build stronger connections with patients, families and our community,” said Dr. Richard Friend, Dean of CCHS, which operates UMC.
