Richard Friend, MD, is the residency director at The University of Alabama Family Medicine Residency • Tuscaloosa as well as associate professor of Family Medicine for the College of Community Health Sciences. Friend received his undergraduate degree at Tulane University in psychology; he graduated from Louisiana State University School of Medicine with honors. He went on to do his residency at LSU in Shreveport. After 10 years of private practice, Friend joined LSU School of Medicine as the assistant residency program director in Bogalusa. He then served as program director from 2007 to 2012. Friend has also served as the medical director for nursing homes, a home hospice and a home health company. He held numerous leadership roles at his hospital during his time in Louisiana, including the role of chief of staff at LSU BMP.

Friend brings a myriad of clinical expertise to the residency and to the College, in addition to his administrative experience, including extensive ER experience, endoscopy, advanced orthopedics, OB/GYN procedures, GXTs and vasectomies, to name a few.
