Expectant black mothers are more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women, and levels of education and income are not necessarily protective factors. Dr. Joy Bradley, assistant professor of community medicine and population health, said chronic stress due to structural inequalities and racism, described as weathering, can lead to poor pregnancy outcomes in black women.
