Monkeypox is a rare disease that causes a rash and flu-like symptoms and usually goes away on its own after two to four weeks. Monkeypox is spread when a person comes into contact with an infected animal or a person infected with the virus, although person-to-person transmission is less common. In the United States, the disease appears to be more common in men who have sex with men, but there are cases in people who don’t fall into that category. After exposure, it might be several days to a few weeks before symptoms develop. Early signs include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, fatigue and swollen lymph nodes. After a few days, a rash often develops. The rash starts as flat, red bumps that then turn into blisters. Most people with Monkeypox get better on their own without treatment.
