April is designated as National Minority Health Awareness Month. Throughout the United States, racial and ethnic minority populations face higher rates of death and disease, including diabetes, hypertension, HIV and sickle cell disease, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Lack of access to health care contributes to those health disparities, the agency says. The goal of National Minority Health Awareness Month is to increase understanding about how environments and cultures impact the health of racial and ethnic minority populations.
