Prioritizing your mental health

May is Mental Health Awareness Month – a great reminder to check in on your well-being and to reach out if you need the support of University Medical Center’s Betty Shirley Clinic. Some mental health conditions require professional care to improve; without it, symptoms may worsen. But like physical illness, mental illness can be diagnosed and effectively managed.

Mental health describes a person’s emotional, psychological, social and cognitive well-being. It affects how we feel, think and interact in our world. In the United States, more than 20% of adults live with a mental illness each year, such as stress, anxiety and mild depression. Yet, fewer than half receive treatment, according to the National Alliance on Mental Health.

At UMC, the Betty Shirley Clinic provides a broad range of mental health care services, such as therapy, mental health evaluations and medication management. Our providers include psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers who are dedicated to helping patients find the right care for their individual needs.

Your mental health matters – not just in May, but every day. Whether you need someone to talk to or you need treatment, the Betty Shirley Clinic is here for you. The clinic is open Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 4:45pm. To schedule an appointment, call (205) 348-1265.
