Diabetes Awareness Month

Diabetes is a condition that changes the way the body turns food into energy, and more than 11% of the U.S. population has this chronic condition, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Normally, the body breaks food down into sugar, which enters the bloodstream and signals the pancreas to release insulin. With diabetes, that process doesn’t work as well as it should. Common symptoms of diabetes include increased thirst, frequent urination and feeling tired. While there is no cure, staying active, eating a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy weight can help lower the risk of diabetes.  Regular health screenings and taking medications as directed can also help manage the condition and prevent complications.
