Improving health for older adults
Two University Medical Center physicians have been serving as medical directors of Crossings at North River Assisted Living in Tuscaloosa, helping guide care for residents at the facility.
In their roles, Drs. Grier Stewart, an internal medicine physician at UMC, and Jackie Luker, a geriatrician at UMC, work with Crossings staff to oversee resident care policies, coordinate medical services and support quality assurance efforts to maintain standards of care. They also provide direct medical care to residents.
Stewart is associate dean for Undergraduate Medical Education and clinical professor in the Department of Family, Internal, and Rural Medicine at the College of Community Health Sciences, which operates UMC. He is also medical director at Forest Manor Nursing Home in Tuscaloosa.
He received his bachelor’s degree from Davidson College in North Carolina, his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, Ala., now known as the UAB Heersink School of Medicine. He also completed his internal medicine residency at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C.
Stewart is a member of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama and the Alabama Medical Directors’ Association.
Luker is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Family, Internal, and Rural Medicine at CCHS and assistant director for Professionalism and Student Engagement with The University of Alabama Tuscaloosa Family Medicine Residency Program, which the College operates. She also serves as associate director of CCHS Rural Programs.
She completed her bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences at The University of Alabama and as a Rural Medical Scholar, she earned her master’s degree in rural community health. She received her medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine and completed her residency training at The UA Tuscaloosa Family Medicine Residency Program. Luker also completed her Geriatric Medicine Fellowship at the College.
