James Reeves, MD

Dr. James Reeves joined the College of Community Health Sciences as associate professor and director of The University of Alabama Wellness Clinic, which is operated by the College. In the role, Reeves is responsible for developing and managing the Wellness Clinic, whose mission is to provide a comprehensive approach for ensuring the health of UA faculty, staff and their families through the provision of medical care, behavioral health care, nutrition and fitness, and other programs. Reeves received a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, and he completed his residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he served as chief resident. Reeves was a U.S. Navy psychiatrist for 20 years, reaching the rank of captain and being designated a master clinician, receiving nine individual and nine service medals, as well as being named the Navy Psychiatrist of the Year in 2015. He served as head of Navy Psychiatry, managing 120 Navy psychiatrists, and later served on the Command Executive Board at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, where he was the director of Mental Health, overseeing more than 300 mental health staff. He deployed several times to Iraq with the Marine Corps Infantry; his last assignment was as advisor to the Navy Surgeon General, overseeing Navy mental health policy. Reeves has authored peer-reviewed publications, and has served as a board examiner for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and as associate clinical professor of Psychiatry at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland.
