Wearing and Caring for Face Masks in the Summer

June 29, 2020

Summer is here and temperatures are heating up, which might make wearing face masks uncomfortable. But face coverings continue to be an effective measure against spreading Covid-19. The Alabama Department of Public Health recommends these strategies to help make wearing a mask more bearable when days are humid and temperatures are hot, and for cleaning your mask after each use.

Wearing your face mask

  • Use two or more layers of 100% cotton material.
  • The lighter the color, the less heat it will attract.
  • If your mask becomes damp with sweat, its ability to block Covid-19 could diminish, so consider keeping an extra mask with you to swap out if necessary.
  • Using clean hands, fit your mask over your nose and mouth. Some people find that face coverings that tie are easier to fit, but you should find what works best for you.
  • Once your mask is on, keep your hands off of it except when removing it.
  • Use clean hands to remove your mask.
  • Wash your face afterward.
  • Caring for your face covering

  • Wash with soap and hot water after each use.
  • Dry in a dryer or on a clothesline in the sunlight.
  • Discard your mask if it becomes worn or won’t remain comfortably in place.
  • ADPH officials said if you have to wear a face covering for an extended period of time, take a break occasionally and get some fresh air, but only when you can safely do so. They also said if you have respiratory issues or other underlying health issues, contact your health-care provider about face coverings and other Covid-19 preventive measures.
