Long-acting reversible contraception is an effective form of birth control that can prevent pregnancy for several years, and that can be removed by a physician if you decide to become pregnant. Dr. Mallory Scogin, an obstetrician-gynecologist at University Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, said there are two types of LARCs – IUDs and implants – and she explains how they work. She also stresses the importance of getting vaccinated against HPV to help prevent cervical and other cancers caused by the human papillomavirus.
